DESIGN PROSE

Organization: Rose of Sharon Services For Young Mothers

Mediums: InDesign, Photoshop, Canva

Styles & Techniques: Publication/Print Design, Social Media Marketing

In addition to my main projects throughout my contract, I was also asked to update and create numerous program flyers, as well as animated Thank You posts and Stories for our generous grand funders this past summer. Being more familiar with social media platforms than my associates, I was also requested to create. a formal social media guide for them to refer to in my absence. Greatly appreciating my consistently high-quality work, I have been informed that I will be commissioned in the future to create further publications and design templates for Rose of Sharon Services for Young Mothers.

HIGH SCHOOL FLYER

HIGH SCHOOL FLYER

High School Program Flyer (Rose of Sharon) (Parents Connect).jpg

As part of the revamp to Parents Connect.ca, I was asked to also create a new flyer for Rose of Sharon's High School Program, which would be displayed on its respective page in the Resource Portal. I ultimately aimed to create a flyer that appeared far more on-brand; the new flyer actively utilized RoS' official colours and font style (Muller), displayed the High School Program's icon, as well as contained a large photograph, also used for its page on Parents Connect.ca, that provided a clear preview of the program's services. This photograph's warm colours also blend in seamlessly with the flyer's shades of pink. The usage of various shades throughout the flyer, rather than simply burgundy, also prevents the flyer from appearing flat or having a jarring scheme with bold, overly contrasting colours. The usage of gradient feather effects further provides a much softer, lush, and fresh look throughout. Furthermore, the updated flyer properly separates the info and contains proper headings to ensure an easier reading experience.

DAD TALK POST

DAD TALK POST

Revised Dad Talk Advert (June Wrap-Up).jpg

Created in Canva, it was mainly required that the updated Dad Talk social media flyer contain enough white space for the program's information, as well as a photograph that would depict Rose of Sharon's diverse clientele. The latter required me to be creative with the chosen stock photograph: few of the photographs found of diverse fathers and children had enough white space to accommodate the information necessary for the flyer. I was therefore required to get creative and remove a photo's background. The photo of the father and daughter that was ultimately chosen for the flyer took place in a brightly lit room and thus would not look out of place against the chosen wall background.

Concerning the display of Dad Talk's info, items often used to jot down to-do lists and keep track of upcoming events were deemed appropriate; handwriting-style fonts would further add a "human" and casual element to the flyer. I also needed to indicate that Dad Talk events would be ending for the year. A maple leaf placed between the notebook's pages would accompany the information that they would start up again. Furthermore, the final post below displays the hashtags utilized for the post, all of which reportedly are receiving the most traction as of late.

MOMMY & ME FLYER

MOMMY & ME FLYER

Posted Mommy & Me Flyer .jpg

This Mommy & Me flyer was created in Canva to make it easier to edit or obtain elements in the future. Contrary to most of my assignments at Rose of Sharon, I was instructed to mainly keep the established colour scheme and format of Mommy & Me flyers and publications. I was also told, however, to organize the information more neatly and perhaps add decorations and accents that would make the flyer more appealing overall. Thus, similar to the High School Program flyer above, I chose to incorporate the side border in previous flyers' to display standard information including the event's "Where," "When," and contact info. Clear, bolded labels and underlines were also added for both aesthetic reasons and to simply organize the information more clearly for the reader.

Concerning decorative fonts and accents, in particular, a bubbly font was considered ideal to reflect the child-centred event. This Canva font, named Borsok, is also large and prominent and thus veers readers' eyes immediately to the name of the event. I also desired to place an assortment of baby toys around the event name due to the event involving playtime. It would also add a sense of whimsy, as well as even out Mommy & Me's bright and contrasting colour scheme.

THANK YOU TO GRANT FUNDERS

THANK YOU TO GRANT FUNDERS

These Stories and Posts were created as a thank-you to these organizations for their grant funding, specifically to Rose of Sharon's new Living & Learning Together program; the logo I created is displayed in the Stories and Posts below. To reflect their association with the Living & Learning Together program, two different photographs of young mothers caring for their children were used as the header photographs for each of these messages. These photographs also had to blend seamlessly into the rest of the template. Elements including cropped images; stylized borders such as the paint streaks and splatters in the Johansen Larsen Story and Post; low-transparency, light-coloured overlays; and feathered gradients are used to subtly blend the photograph(s) with the template's background and additional elements. The bubbly and wavy accents, in particular, were utilized to enhance the Stories and Posts' playful nature. In a similar vein, both posts also contain backgrounds resembling the plastic table coverings often used by young children. This is especially appropriate for the Johansen-Larsen post, as many of this organization's causes and events tend to be related to creating artwork; the template visibly reflects both the goals and activities of Rose of Sharon and the Johansen Larsen Foundation. A formal yet lush, fresh, and on-brand aesthetic that was ultimately aimed for both the Stories and Posts versions of these thank you messages.

SHARE YOUR STORY CONCEPT

SHARE YOUR STORY

When asked to create a few social media concepts for Rose of Sharon, the first that came to mind was Share Your Story. This concept involves inquiring both former and current utilizers of Rose of Sharon’s services for a description or short interview about their experience or success story. I pictured organizing either a bi-weekly reel interview or two to three slides worth of dialogue to provide detailed yet concise answers. For slideshow interviews, photographs of the mother and perhaps her children would be most ideal, particularly if the mother is comfortable. If not, generic parenting and baby-related stock imagery may be used in place of this. Considering our aforementioned desire to neutralize Rose of Sharon’s brand, we may also reach out to fathers and other guardians if they are available and willing to talk. For variety, users of specifically different programs should be interviewed. Emphasis should be placed on Rose of Sharon’s High School Program, as this group requires the most de-stigmatization, not to mention support and comfort from others’ stories and experiences.

Slideshow Interview Mockup

At least four pictures from the interviewee would be needed for a slide-show interview such as this. If she does not want her picture used, four stock images such as these may be used, as well as a fake The interview's core purpose is to authentically inform readers of their experience with the program.

Reel Interview Mockup

This type of interview would require only one photo from the interviewee for the title slide. This video-type interview would be best for those comfortable with talking about themselves and their experiences and do not want to remain anonymous. Concerning the links included on the closing slide, this particular interviewee is representing Rosie's Closet Resource Room and would speak about her experience with the Group Programs. Therefore, those links would be displayed in the closing slide.

Story Mockups

Share Your Story's Q&A Poll would be launched on the first day of each month and again two weeks later; the Share Your Story series would be bi-weekly. A "questions" sticker, located in Instagram's sticker bank, would also be used (shown at the bottom) for people to enter their input/answers. For people who aren't too familiar with Rose of Sharon's programs, they are listed on the left. Once an interviewee has been chosen, the Story advertising posting of the interview must be ideally posted daily to keep followers in the know.

Q&A MONDAYS CONCEPT

Q&A MONDAYS

The Q&A Mondays Story would be posted every Monday morning with a question box added on the bottom left. Such would allow readers to enter their questions, which Rose of Sharon personnel would be given a full week to answer: Q&A Mondays Posts would be posted to Rose of Sharon's Instagram wall every Monday morning containing the answers to questions entered by readers the previous week in last week's Story's question box. If there are more questions than can be fit on the first slide, the second slide displayed below may be simply used; the second slide contains ample space for additional questions and detailed answers. The second slide's format may be used more than once if more questions require answering. And, of course, the last slide is for informing readers where to enter more questions for next week's post. Similar to Share Your Story, this series would be used to increase Rose of Sharon's outreach and provide further opportunities to advertise their services.
