Styles & Techniques: Publication/Print Design
As the Head Illustration Coordinator at UTM Scribes, I collaborated on Slate VII: GRIT (2022), the seventh volume of our annual creative journal. Slate is a collection of short stories, poems, artwork, and photography created by UTM students, with all proceeds donated to Doctors Without Borders. I designed the book cover for Slate VII and worked closely with the executive team to develop ideas and create artwork for promotions and events. Additionally, I managed the illustration and photography team to ensure that all projects were completed on time.

FRONT COVER DESIGN

The theme for this year's volume was "grit," which refers to an individual's determination and passion for perseverance, regardless of the obstacles they face. I chose to design a cover depicting a young woman successfully climbing a tall, Everest-like mountain, with birds soaring in the sky above. The presence of the flying birds adds an extra element of success and symbolizes the enjoyment of reaping the rewards of hard work.
BACKGROUND CREATION

I thought that a lovely effect would be made by lowering the transparency of the blue sky to have a background consisting of a collage of all the illustrations within the publication. Created in Canva, I believed that this collage would add to the design's emotional impact, particularly what is within reach in one's life once one has overcome all of its trials and tribulations.
